About the watch

The Santos-Dumont holds a key role in the history of Cartier and modern watchmaking. Created in 1904 for Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, it was designed to allow the wearer to tell the time during flight, marking a turning point compared to the exclusive use of pocket watches. It is today considered one of the first true men's wristwatches.

Unlike the Santos de Cartier, which evolved over time into a more sporty and contemporary collection, the Santos-Dumont has always represented the purest and most historic soul of the original project. Its slender proportions, lack of superfluous complications, and strong adherence to the original design make it a rare example of stylistic consistency in modern watchmaking.

This Dumont perfectly embodies this philosophy: not a modern reinterpretation in a technical sense, but a faithful transposition of the original spirit in a contemporary key. Within the context of current Cartier production, the Santos-Dumont is the model that more than any other directly engages with the history of the Maison.

For the collector, this watch represents a meeting point between historical relevance, aesthetic rigor, and everyday wearability. It is a conscious choice, far removed from fashion, reflecting a profound understanding of the Cartier language and its origins.

Know your watch

The Cartier Santos-Dumont, reference WSSA0022, represents one of the most faithful and refined interpretations of the wristwatch originally designed by Cartier in the early 20th century. Crafted from stainless steel and presented here in a full set configuration, this model prioritizes elegance, proportion, and formal purity over any sporty vocation.

The ultra-thin 43.5 x 31.4 mm steel case, with its perfectly defined lines, retains the historic geometry of the Santos-Dumont, with gently chamfered corners and a flat profile that rests naturally on the wrist. The polished bezel with exposed screws remains one of the distinctive design elements, underscoring the model's technical-industrial character despite its strongly classic context.

The silvered opaline dial is a paragon of balance and aesthetic rigor. The elongated and well-spaced black Roman numerals interact with the railway minute track that frames the composition. The blued steel sword hands offer a refined contrast, while the absence of a date helps preserve the model's visual clarity and historical accuracy. Sapphire crystal protects the dial without compromising its readability.

The Santos-Dumont WSSA0022 is powered by the Cartier automatic caliber 430 MC, a slim and reliable movement based on Piaget architecture, chosen to maintain the elegant profile of the case. Its power reserve and smooth operation make it ideal for everyday use, in keeping with the model's philosophy. Its water resistance is limited to 30 meters, confirming its status as a classic wristwatch rather than a sports instrument.

The watch is completed with a leather strap with a Cartier pin buckle, a choice that further reinforces the formal and timeless character of the Santos-Dumont.
